How do we speak brilliantly every time we get up in front
of a group, whether its to
talk to five people in a
board room, or 500 in an
auditorium? How do we handle
anxiety? Build instant
rapport? Keep everyone
energized and receptive?
As an award-winning speaker,
member of National Speakers
Association and creator of a
speaking skills seminar for
Dun & Bradstreet, Jennifer
Webb brings to her coaching
years of hands-on
experience.
How Successful are you at
speaking in public? Did you
know
Its
always best to rehearse the
first minute or two at the
most.
This
enables you to be
comfortable when youre the
most nervous (at the
beginning) and helps you
make that great first
impression. If you rehears
an equal amount of time on
the entire presentation, and
dont grab them at the
beginning, you must spend
the rest of the time trying
to undo a bad or mediocre
first impression.
Always rehearse planning for
disruptions,
and have a friend/co-worker
interrupt you during your
rehearsal. Then youll be
prepared for whatever might
happen when you speak.
Never
rehearse in the same place.
Vary
where you practice, as well
as the direction you face.
Otherwise when you actually
present, you may be slightly
disoriented.
Always involve your audience,
even if its only asking
them a question they must
shake their heads to, or
raise their hands for.
Remember to write smile,
breathe, and eye contact
on your notes,
and place notes at the top
of the podium. In this way
you will have less head
bobbing when reading your
notes and looking at the
audience.
