“By believing passionately in something that does not yet exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired,” said Nikos Kazantzakis. Which is great when we have the resources and tools to create that focus. But what about when we get sidetracked by what others tell us we can or can’t do?
Amaury Guichon grew up in Switzerland and his teachers told him, when he was only 14, that he was not smart enough to do anything with his life. Because of his poor grades, they gave him two options for vocational schools, and of the two was culinary school. Today he is one of the world’s most renowned pastry chefs and a leading chocolate sculptor. How marvelous he forgot to listen to those who told him he had no potential, and could put his passion behind something he wanted.
Where are we letting well-meaning people tell us what we can or can’t do? I’ve had so many people say things to me like , “Let me save you the trouble, here’s why you won’t be able to…”and just fill in the blank. If we’re to believe passionately about whatever we want to bring into our lives, then we need to pay attention to whose opinions we’re still listening to, that can rob us of our vision and passion.
Charles Bukowski asked, “Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?”
